8 Learn more at canneryrow.com The Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary is one of our nation’s treasured underwater parks. Extending 35 miles offshore, the Sanctuary covers 5300 square miles and possesses an astonishing array of marine life, including 26 species of marine mammals, 345 species of fish, 4 species of turtles, 31 phyla of invertebrates (the clams, sea urchins and abalone of the world) and hundreds of plant species. Nothing beats the experience of meeting seals or sea otters out on the water—in a kayak or on a stand up paddle board (great exercise for the core). While good marine ‘etiquette’ (and the law) requires maintaining a distance of 50 feet, you will get up close and personal with these ambassadors of the sea. You can be out in a kayak—rented for one or two people—with only a few minutes basic instruction, and provided with nyloncoated splash suits that go on over your clothing. There is no better place to experience the Sanctuary than on Cannery Row. Walk McAbee or San Carlos Beach, searching the waves and sand for shells and sea creatures. Monterey Bay is one of the world’s premiere cold-water diving destinations, so put on your wet suit and start exploring. Or you can just pull up a deck chair, relax with a glass of wine or an ice cream cone and watch the waves roll into shore. MONTEREY BAY NATIONAL MARINE SANCTUARY

The monument pays tribute to the many diverse characters vital to the evolution of Cannery Row. Perched atop the rocky outcropping sits Nobel Prize winning author John Steinbeck, who immortalized Cannery Row with his novel of the same name. He is surrounded by eight other figures, some reminiscent of Cannery Row’s bustling sardine canning days, and others from a different time, whose imagination transformed Cannery Row into the vibrant tourism destination it is today. At the base is Ed Ricketts, Steinbeck’s good friend and one of the “fathers” of marine biology, who studied the sea life and tide pools of Monterey Bay. The figure of a Chinese fisherman is a reminder of the Chinese fishing village established in the mid-1800s on the site, which today borders one of the most beautiful marine sanctuaries in the world. The two female figures represent “Madam” Flora Woods, known for her boundless generosity, and one of her girls. The four “boys” sitting together were modeled after four entrepreneurs, Ted Balestreri, Bert Cutino, Harry Davidian and George Zarounian, who dedicated themselves to the area’s rebirth. They, together with other key partners, brought Cannery Row back to life. The monument tells of Cannery Row’s history and importance in California’s past. First inhabited by Native Americans then settled by the Spanish, Monterey later became home to many immigrants, including Chinese, Italian, Portuguese, Mexican, Filipino, Norwegian, Scottish and Japanese. 10 Learn more at canneryrow.com CANNERY ROW MONUMENT

Wing Chong Market Opened in 1918, it is still owned by the Yee family. Won Yee, its founder, was Steinbeck’s model for Lee Chong in Cannery Row. The building remains little changed since the 1930s. Hovden Cannery/Monterey Bay Aquarium In 1916, Knut Hovden constructed a major cannery in response to World War I ration demands for Monterey sardines. Monterey Canning Company & Warehouse 700 and 711 Cannery Row Originally one of Monterey’s major sardine canneries, the two buildings of the Monterey Canning Company are connected by one of the original sixteen bridges that vaulted the street, shuttling unfilled cans to the cannery and then packed cans of sardines back to the warehouse for shipping by rail (today’s Recreation Trail follows the path of the rail lines). Today, visitors find unique shops and restaurants and walk the bridge to both. Spindrift Inn 652 Cannery Row The Wu family built the stylish Ocean View Hotel in 1927 as part of the Roaring Twenties expansion of Monterey. Today, the Spindrift Inn—one of the Inns of Monterey collection—is located on the site and reflects the charm of the original. Booth’s Warehouse & Edgewater Packing Co. 640 Wave St. and 95 Prescott St. The post World War I brick reduction Warehouse and the World War II era Edgewater Packing Company helped turn two-thirds of Monterey’s sardines into fishmeal and fertilizer, a far more profitable venture than canning the fish. The baking of fishmeal accounted for the horrendous smell for which Monterey became dubiously famous. “Bear Flag Building” 653 Cannery Row Built in 1929 as an annex to the Ocean View Hotel, the “Marina Apartments” featured distinctive tile “dragon roofs,” an homage to the Chinese heritage of the Wu family.
