6 Monterey County GIVES! 2023 mcgives.com Monterey County Gives! has an indelible imprint on local year-end giving. For all the great work of the Community Foundation for Monterey in grantmaking, disaster response, scholarships, etc., MCGives! is the topic most often brought up to me. It inspires; the energy supporting the work of nonprofits lifts all our spirits. The current iteration of MCGives! started in 2009, when it raised about $418,000. It was a point of pride. In those days, people sent checks in the mail. In 2010 we introduced the website and online giving, and raised $629,000. We thought we’d hit the high-water mark; it was crazy to think it could get any larger. We also utilized a David and Lucile Packard Foundation grant to hire a consultant who would train participating nonprofits on how to utilize social media to seek donations. That now sounds quaint, but what we didn’t know was that the expertise in rallying donors would create important horsepower. Last year, 7,698 donors participated, 476 of them ages 18 to 35. The overall matching fund has always been part of MCGives! In 2010, it consisted of donations from the Packard Foundation, Neumeier Poma Investment Counsel, the Weekly and CFMC; it came to about $125,000. This produced a pro-rata match of 20 percent, meaning if you gave $100 to Community Partnership for Youth, the group received $120. We have always known the match inspires more giving. When the Monterey Peninsula Foundation joined as a major partner through a grant to the match pool, the campaign experienced its first big jump, going from $1.3 million raised to $3.2 million. The challenge is having the match pool keep pace with growth. If the match is an incentive to give, it needs to be material. New partners have joined along the way: the Ernie and Gunde Posey Family Foundation, Colby and Alana Jones Foundation, Cannery Row Company, and more. The remarkable total raised in 2022 ($11.2 million!) got me thinking about whether others would want their logos affixed to MCGives! Not only would it create a larger match pool, but it would show widespread support from significant donors in our community to bolster this philanthropic project that invites small donations from people giving at all levels. Requests to the Harden Foundation and Nancy Eccles and Homer M. Hayward Foundation resulted in quick yeses, and a conversation with Bruce Taylor turned into major support from Taylor Farms. If I had any doubts about the growing MCGives! “brand,” they went away when an anonymous donor contributed $500,000. This year’s pool will be larger than ever. I invite you to join in this philanthropic effort. Learn about the critical work of the 206 nonprofits in the pages that follow, and please support them at whatever level you can. Monterey County will be better for it. Dan Baldwin is president and CEO of the Community Foundation for Monterey County. Important Dates Nov. 9 MCGives! kicks off and website goes live at mcgives.com. Nov. 28 #GivingTuesday is an international day of giving. You can participate through Monterey County Gives! Cultivating Community Monterey County Gives! grows one idea at a time, one donor at a time. By Bradley Zeve The cliche “the new normal” became common in our vernacular just a few years back—expressing how previous uncommon events were suddenly commonplace, a new baseline. It’s fair to say we’re in full recovery mode after the initial Covid wave. But still, the world feels more upside down than any other time—even though we’ve all lived through some earth-shaking natural and human-made local and world disasters. In the upside-down department, the U.S. House of Representatives just ended three tumultuous weeks without a Speaker; the appropriation resolution to temporarily fund our government ends Nov. 17. In the upside-down department, terrorists from Hamas crossed the border into Israel and killed hundreds of young people attending a music festival while capturing hundreds of civilian hostages, reigniting turmoil there, and worldwide antisemitism as well as Islamophobia. In September and October, racists Zoom-bombed city council meetings in Monterey, Seaside and Pacific Grove. In the upside-down department, the Russian invasion of Ukraine continues to unnerve peace in Europe, unsettle the world economy, and reorganize global political and economic partnerships. Here at the Weekly and Monterey County NOW, we’ve always held a special place to both observe and report on this news. Our goal has always been to be informative and accurate and offer critical insight and analysis, to help you have a better understanding and perspective. We also deliver inspiring and hopeful stories about local community members doing work that improves life for all of us. One inspiring sector we frequently report on is the nonprofit community, where pushing boulders uphill is part of the job description.. Monterey County Gives! has been an amazing project for the Weekly team to be part of since its inception; our own donor-advised fund at the Community Foundation morphed into Monterey County Gives! and partner after partner stepped in to join this project (special thanks to the Community Foundation and Monterey Peninsula Foundation— they’ve been game-changers). We’ve all had our hands in the dirt with you, cultivating community, identifying the ideas and organizations and people deserving our love and support. This “new normal” is nothing short of incredible and awe-inspiring. In your hands is our special edition of the 2023 Monterey County Gives! Last year, we collectively broke all expectations and records, raising over $11 million in six weeks, thanks to 7,500 of you who donated. Imagine if we can increase that number of donors to 10,000, then 20,000 in years to come, all in support of the organizations on the front lines of positive change for our community, each with their hands in the dirt, cultivating big and small projects that will impact all of us, for years to come. Please join in, invite your neighbors and friends to donate, and together we can create a new normal that is right-side up, but only if we’re doing this together. Please join us. Let’s cultivate greatness. Bradley Zeve is Founder & CEO of Monterey County Weekly and Monterey County NOW. 16 Monterey County GIVES! 2023 mcgives.com Animals DONate online mcgives.com Animal Friends Rescue Project Year Founded: 1998 Paid Staff and Volunteers: 15 paid, 887 volunteers Budget: $1,160,000 333-0722 animalfriendsrescue.org Big Idea: This nonprofit is a friend to the most vulnerable shelter animals in Monterey County, rescuing homeless and owner-surrendered companion animals most at-risk from euthanization. These animals may be shy, traumatized or elderly—but still worthy and eager to be someone’s forever friend. Animal Friends Rescue Project provides lifesaving medical care for vulnerable animals using an extensive foster volunteer network. This Big Idea also includes free spay and neuter services, with more than 1,000 stray cats receiving care last year. “Our two beautiful pups, Rusty and Pepper, came to us from knowledgeable, loving and conscientious AFRP foster parents. Their foster families were able to assess our fitness as adopters and give us valuable information about the dogs. This process ensured a great match! Beyond what AFRP means to individual families like mine, they make a real difference to the wider community. I am impressed by the impact AFRP has and the way they achieve their mission. AFRP has cultivated, sustained and utilized a large group of dedicated volunteers for many years. This enables the funds they raise to go primarily to the direct care for the animals. We are very grateful for AFRP and proud to be donors to the organization.” -Tobi Marcus BirchBark Year Founded: 2013 Paid Staff and Volunteers: 2.5 paid, 50 volunteers Budget: $497,505 471-7255 birchbarkfoundation.org Big Idea: This nonprofit preserves the sacred human-animal bond with its three Big Idea programs: PetAid, Pet Loss Grief Counseling, and educational programs. PetAid provides financial assistance to reduce “economic euthanasia” so pet owners faced with expensive emergency veterinary care can consider this option. Free Pet Loss Grief Counseling helps bereaved pet owners navigate the loss of their companion animals and educational webinars educate pet owners on responsible animal care. “BirchBark Foundation has given me more time with my dog, which is everything! They have supported us in a difficult time and we are so grateful.” -Denise R. Golden Oldies Cat Rescue Year Founded: 2016 Paid Staff and Volunteers: 3 paid, 70 volunteers Budget: $134,053 200-9700 gocatrescue.org Big Idea: Cats 6 years and older have a powerful advocate with the Big Idea at Golden Oldies Cat Rescue, the only Monterey County rescue exclusively focused on senior cats. These cats are often surrendered after their long-term owner dies or cannot provide care. This means older cats, used to one home or owner, can experience a difficult, grieffilled transition, too. Foster homes nurture these cats until their forever families come along, often providing necessary and expensive medical and dental care. “Lulu and I are celebrating our very first anniversary. She’s come a long, long way since the day she arrived and took up residence under the loveseat. I’m very impressed with my sweet and quirky roommate, and thankful to have her running the house now and making new rules for me every single day. I may have failed as a foster, but I’ve most certainly succeeded in helping to change Lulu’s life…and she’s made mine happier, more meaningful and a lot more fun. Makes me a happy mama to share everything with her and watch her progress both inside the house and outside in her patio. Thank you, Universe, and thank you, Golden Oldies!” -Candy Kelly South Monterey County Animal Rescue (SCAR) Year Founded: 2017 Paid Staff and Volunteers: 0 paid, 28 volunteers Budget: $120,000 525-5160 scar.pet Big Idea: South Monterey County Animal Rescue operates a volunteer-led animal rescue, focused on supporting the rural communities of South Monterey County and partnering with other rescue agencies. SCAR’s Big Idea supports the hardworking volunteers who often care for kittens, cats and dogs—also attending to their critical medical needs—until they are ready for adoption. “SCAR has always shown compassion for the unwanted and undesirable cats and dogs through their commitment to serving our communities. The work they do is a labor of love. I have seen how SCAR goes above and beyond to give animals a fighting chance at living a good and happy life.” -Ruth Diaz, Soledad spotlight They are helping each other!” Lori Tuttle, Hope, Horses, and Kids

Now through December 31st, we are eagerly accepting donations, and here's the best part: your donations will be matched! In other words, the more you give, the more that is matched. With your generous donations, you will make a world of difference, providing crucial medical care for our most at-risk animals, including dogs battling parvovirus, cats fighting panleukopenia, and those in need of orthopedic procedures. At AFRP, our mission is to save vulnerable local shelter animals, including those who are sick, injured, or need some extra love and care. Your support is the lifeline for animals who have nowhere else to turn, animals who, without you, might never have the chance to know the comfort of a loving home or the gentle touch of a caring hand. Your generous support means the world to us and to the animals we serve. Thank you for being a part of this mission.

Hope, Horses, and Kids use the quiet strength and leadership of horses to help children with special needs develop essential life skills. While youth are the focus, this nonprofit seeks donations to support the equine assistants also critical to the success of this Big Idea. Donors support the horses’ health, nutrition, veterinary checkups, and supplies and equipment required for these animals’ daily needs. “Maddie is a gray mare that came to us anxious and unsure, but so relational. For her rehab, she simply needed assertive guidance and some time to develop trust, and she is now soft, confident and connected. She teams superbly with our clients that have anxiety. For example, Maddie is always happy to spend time with Phoenix, who lives with Tourette syndrome and severe anxiety. As he rides Maddie, Phoenix connects with and reflects her energy and also is so soft and gentle. They are helping each other!” -Lori Tuttle Marine Life Studies Year Founded: 2006 Paid Staff and Volunteers: 2 paid, 177 volunteers Budget: $230,000 901-3833 marinelifestudies.org Big Idea: Donors can help protect the biggest mammals in the ocean with Marine Life Studies’ Big Idea: the Whale Entanglement Team, a rapid response group to rescue whales entangled in lost or abandoned fishing gear. Funds support the maintenance of the R/V Current’Sea (also known as the whale disentanglement ambulance) and help purchase specialized equipment for future entanglement responses to ensure that the WET team is ready for every call. “As a native to the Monterey Peninsula, I’ve spent my entire life in, on, and around the ocean. Our local environment is a beautiful yet fragile place. In working with Marine Life Studies as a documentary filmmaker, I have come to know them as an integral part in the protection of our wondrous bay. Their outreach, education and entanglement programs fulfill an important and necessary role in the conservation of our marine environment.” -Matthew Ferraro, director of photography, JeanMichel Cousteau’s Ocean Futures Society Max’s Helping Paws Foundation Year Founded: 2016 Paid Staff and Volunteers: 2 paid, 15 volunteers Budget: $437,250 704-6473 maxshelpingpaws.org Big Idea: Sometimes all you need is a helping paw when facing a hard time. Max’s Helping Paws offers a Special Supplemental Program to provide additional financial assistance to low-income pet owners classified as senior, disabled, homeless or veteran who are facing urgent veterinary care and accompanying expenses. Often, these situations result in unnecessary euthanization or suffering for the pet or the owner sacrificing their own basic needs. Donors can contribute to this Big Idea, which adds up to an extra $250 for pet owners, beyond other financial assistance awarded. “My boy is feeling much better with his medication and I owe that to your services. I would not have been able to take care of this without your support. You have my deep gratitude that I am having difficulty putting into words.” -Juan G. Peace of Mind Dog Rescue (POMDR) Year Founded: 2009 Paid Staff and Volunteers: 30 paid, 1,423 volunteers Budget: $1,710,900 718-9122 peaceofminddogrescue.org SNIP Bus Year Founded: 2016 Paid Staff and Volunteers: 0 paid, 9 volunteers Budget: $1,672,000 (925) 895-8531 snipbus.org Big Idea: In its mission to help end pet overpopulation, the SNIP Bus recently celebrated the milestone of 30,000 pets fixed in Monterey County over the past five years. However, the work continues—this nonprofit’s Big Idea reminds us that the local need for low-cost mobile spay and neuter services for the animals belonging to low-income residents is more overwhelming than ever. The skyrocketing cost of living means veterinary care is even more unrealistic for many, making this mobile, affordable service even more valuable. “I cannot tell you how much SNIP Bus means to me: I take stray dogs off the street in East Salinas who are now my family. I cannot afford to get them fixed, but love them so very much. I am very, very grateful for the service SNIP provides so my babies won’t have babies. Without what SNIP does for me (and the community), I do not know what I would do.” -Anonymous, Salinas spotlight The SPCA gives all animals a second chance. They also give people a second chance.” Harrison and Isela Perdue, SPCA Monterey County

Students at nonprofit Rancho Cielo will have a chance to foster homeless dogs and teach them basic skills, manners and socialization in preparation for adoption. This eight-week program is a win-win, teaching youth valuable life skills by caring for and training dogs and providing opportunities for personal growth, all while helping homeless dogs get ready to become beloved family pets. “UnChained is among our most popular and successful programs with our youth population, and its impact in our facility and in the lives of the youth who participate in the program cannot be overstated. We have enjoyed numerous benefits. Youth who engage in the program demonstrate notable progress in their awareness of self and others, increased confidence and improved interpersonal skills. Additionally, those who complete the program frequently report they feel they have grown their patience and enhanced their abilities to understand the thoughts and feelings of others. These new or expanded skills and abilities enable justice-involved youths to cope with challenges and stressors in a healthier manner, and often lead to greater participation in other important rehabilitative programs and services.” -Isabel Anderson, division director at Monterey County Youth Center spotlight The recovery of the California condor serves as an icon of hope for endangered species around the world.” Les Lo Baugh, Jr., Ventana Wildlife Society
