6 Monterey County GIVES! 2023 mcgives.com Monterey County Gives! has an indelible imprint on local year-end giving. For all the great work of the Community Foundation for Monterey in grantmaking, disaster response, scholarships, etc., MCGives! is the topic most often brought up to me. It inspires; the energy supporting the work of nonprofits lifts all our spirits. The current iteration of MCGives! started in 2009, when it raised about $418,000. It was a point of pride. In those days, people sent checks in the mail. In 2010 we introduced the website and online giving, and raised $629,000. We thought we’d hit the high-water mark; it was crazy to think it could get any larger. We also utilized a David and Lucile Packard Foundation grant to hire a consultant who would train participating nonprofits on how to utilize social media to seek donations. That now sounds quaint, but what we didn’t know was that the expertise in rallying donors would create important horsepower. Last year, 7,698 donors participated, 476 of them ages 18 to 35. The overall matching fund has always been part of MCGives! In 2010, it consisted of donations from the Packard Foundation, Neumeier Poma Investment Counsel, the Weekly and CFMC; it came to about $125,000. This produced a pro-rata match of 20 percent, meaning if you gave $100 to Community Partnership for Youth, the group received $120. We have always known the match inspires more giving. When the Monterey Peninsula Foundation joined as a major partner through a grant to the match pool, the campaign experienced its first big jump, going from $1.3 million raised to $3.2 million. The challenge is having the match pool keep pace with growth. If the match is an incentive to give, it needs to be material. New partners have joined along the way: the Ernie and Gunde Posey Family Foundation, Colby and Alana Jones Foundation, Cannery Row Company, and more. The remarkable total raised in 2022 ($11.2 million!) got me thinking about whether others would want their logos affixed to MCGives! Not only would it create a larger match pool, but it would show widespread support from significant donors in our community to bolster this philanthropic project that invites small donations from people giving at all levels. Requests to the Harden Foundation and Nancy Eccles and Homer M. Hayward Foundation resulted in quick yeses, and a conversation with Bruce Taylor turned into major support from Taylor Farms. If I had any doubts about the growing MCGives! “brand,” they went away when an anonymous donor contributed $500,000. This year’s pool will be larger than ever. I invite you to join in this philanthropic effort. Learn about the critical work of the 206 nonprofits in the pages that follow, and please support them at whatever level you can. Cultivating Community Monterey County Gives! grows one idea at a time, one donor at a time. By Bradley Zeve The cliche “the new normal” became common in our vernacular just a few years back—expressing how previous uncommon events were suddenly commonplace, a new baseline. It’s fair to say we’re in full recovery mode after the initial Covid wave. But still, the world feels more upside down than any other time—even though we’ve all lived through some earth-shaking natural and human-made local and world disasters. In the upside-down department, the U.S. House of Representatives just ended three tumultuous weeks without a Speaker; the appropriation resolution to temporarily fund our government ends Nov. 17. In the upside-down department, terrorists from Hamas crossed the border into Israel and killed hundreds of young people attending a music festival while capturing hundreds of civilian hostages, reigniting turmoil there, and worldwide antisemitism as well as Islamophobia. In September and October, racists Zoom-bombed city council meetings in Monterey, Seaside and Pacific Grove. In the upside-down department, the Russian invasion of Ukraine continues to unnerve peace in Europe, unsettle the world economy, and reorganize global political and economic partnerships. Here at the Weekly and Monterey County NOW, we’ve always held a special place to both observe and report on this news. Our goal has always been to be informative and accurate and offer critical insight and analysis, to help you have a better understanding and perspective. We also deliver inspiring and hopeful stories about local community members doing work that improves life for all of us. One inspiring sector we frequently report on is the nonprofit community, where pushing boulders uphill is part of the job description.. Monterey County Gives! has been an amazing project for the Weekly team to be part of since its inception; our own donor-advised fund at the Community Foundation morphed into Monterey County Gives! and partner after partner stepped in to join this project (special thanks to the Community Foundation and Monterey Peninsula Foundation— they’ve been game-changers). We’ve all had our hands in the dirt with you, cultivating community, identifying the ideas and organizations and people deserving our love and support. This “new normal” is nothing short of incredible and awe-inspiring. In your hands is our special edition of the 2023 Monterey County Gives! Last year, we collectively broke all expectations and records, raising over $11 million in six weeks, thanks to 7,500 of you who donated. Imagine if we can increase that number of donors to 10,000, then 20,000 in years to come, all in support of the organizations on the front lines of positive change for our community, each with their hands in the dirt, cultivating big and small projects that will impact all of us, for years to come. These animals may be shy, traumatized or elderly—but still worthy and eager to be someone’s forever friend. Animal Friends Rescue Project provides lifesaving medical care for vulnerable animals using an extensive foster volunteer network. This Big Idea also includes free spay and neuter services, with more than 1,000 stray cats receiving care last year. “Our two beautiful pups, Rusty and Pepper, came to us from knowledgeable, loving and conscientious AFRP foster parents. Their foster families were able to assess our fitness as adopters and give us valuable information about the dogs. This process ensured a great match! Beyond what AFRP means to individual families like mine, they make a real difference to the wider community. I am impressed by the impact AFRP has and the way they achieve their mission. AFRP has cultivated, sustained and utilized a large group of dedicated volunteers for many years. This enables the funds they raise to go primarily to the direct care for the animals. These cats are often surrendered after their long-term owner dies or cannot provide care. This means older cats, used to one home or owner, can experience a difficult, grieffilled transition, too. Foster homes nurture these cats until their forever families come along, often providing necessary and expensive medical and dental care. “Lulu and I are celebrating our very first anniversary. For example, Maddie is always happy to spend time with Phoenix, who lives with Tourette syndrome and severe anxiety.
